This guide will walk you through how to frame giclée art prints or works on paper yourself using off the shelf frames for an affordable option. Alternatively, you can take your print or artwork to your local framers for advice on the best way to present your piece.
Understanding Your Print's Size and Border
Before framing, identify your print's size and the presence of a white border. This border is often intentional, serving as a visual buffer between the artwork and the frame and can allow space for the artist's signature.
Choosing the Right Frame
I aim to create fine art prints that fit easily into off the shelf frames and will give clear dimensions in the product description.
Frame Size:
Exact Fit (No Mount): If your print has a white border consider a frame that matches the print's exact size. This minimalist approach lets the border act as a built-in mount.
With Mount: For a more traditional look or to emphasise the artwork, choose a larger frame and add a mount board that matches the print's size. This creates a visual separation and draws attention to the art.
Frame Material and Style:
Wood: Classic and versatile, wood frames offer warmth and texture.
Metal: Modern and sleek, metal frames provide a minimalist aesthetic.
Acrylic: Lightweight and shatter-resistant, acrylic frames are ideal for large prints or spaces where safety is a concern.
Glazing:
Glass: Traditional and highly scratch-resistant but heavier and more fragile than acrylic.
NB Art glass is a fantastic option if you are having your piece professionally framed as it will provide additional UV protection and is non reflective offering crystal clear clarity.
Acrylic: Lightweight, shatter-resistant and UV-protective making it a popular choice for modern framing.
Assembling the Frame
Wash and dry your hands: Ensure they are clean and grease free, wear white gloves if you can (!)
Clean the Glazing: Use a microfiber cloth to remove dust and smudges. There is nothing worse than securing your print in place only to discover there is something trapped inside the frame or a mark on the inside of the glazing!
Position the Print: Centre the print on the mount (if using) and place it in the frame.
Secure the Print: Use the frame's backing to secure the print and prevent movement. Add a small piece of low adhesive masking tape if needed. Be gentle to avoid creasing the print.
Hanging Your Framed Print
Eye Level: Hang the frame at eye level, typically around 56-61 inches from the floor.
Gallery Wall: When hanging multiple prints, maintain consistent spacing between frames for a balanced look (read my gallery wall guide here)
Caring for Your Framed Prints
Avoid Direct Sunlight: Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause fading.
Regular Cleaning: Dust the frame and glazing with a soft, dry cloth.
