Dive Deeper: The World of Abstract Art

Updated: May 3

Welcome, art enthusiasts, to a realm where reality bends and emotions take centre stage: the captivating world of abstract art! Abstract art. It can be a splash of colour that evokes a feeling, a whirlwind of lines that pulsates with energy, or a composition of geometric shapes that sparks intellectual curiosity. But what exactly is it, and how can you appreciate it?

I'm passionate about showcasing the power of abstract art. Unlike representational art that depicts objects or scenes from the real world, abstract art uses shapes, colours, lines, and textures to create its own visual language. This doesn't mean abstract art is devoid of meaning – far from it! By breaking free from representing the physical world, abstract art allows artists to explore emotions, ideas, and concepts in a more direct and evocative way.

Let's delve deeper into the captivating world of abstract art. Here are a few ways to approach these works:

  • Follow your emotions: Abstract art is all about how it makes you feel. Does a particular shade of red evoke passion? Does a swirl of blues create a sense of calm? There are no right or wrong interpretations – let the artwork speak to you on a personal level.

  • Explore the elements: Look closely at the shapes, lines, colours, and textures used. How are they arranged? Do they create a sense of balance or tension? Does the artist use thick impasto strokes or delicate brushwork? Analysing these elements can reveal the artist's intention and add depth to your appreciation.

  • Think about the context: Many abstract artists are influenced by specific movements or historical periods. Explore the biographies of the artists on display and learn about the ideas that fuelled their creativity. Understanding the context can unlock new layers of meaning in the abstract art you see.

I invite you to explore our collection of abstract art including works by Jessie Woodward, Abi Wason, Jakub Sohe and Christine Evans.. We have a diverse range of styles, from the expressive lines of Abstract Expressionism to the geometric precision of Minimalism. Immerse yourself in the world of abstract art, let your imagination soar, and discover the power of visual language!
